Subterranea
Solo exhibition, Lowlands Project Space, Edmonton AB
2022
The cave occupies the strange intersection of fear and compulsion. Though dangerous and alien, experienced explorers and amateurs alike are drawn into these wild places past the point of safety. What is it that calls us in? Does some primordial piece of our consciousness recognize them as home?
Subterranea explores the duality of these wild places, creating an immersive cavern for viewers to explore. Combining inky woodcut prints and plush textiles elements, the work elicits the claustrophobic comfort of caves for those brave enough to peer, squeeze, and crawl through it. Subterranea offers glimpses of large scale tapestries through darkened passages, soft space for contemplation, and a magnetic experience balanced with unease.
